Principal Cavato’s FYI 7.9.2018

Welcome mid-summer! We are officially halfway through our summer break, it will be back to school time in 5 ½ weeks, I hope everyone had a safe & fun 4th of July with family & friends this past week. Our building has started the work of cleaning up classrooms & hallways from summer school to get ready for August, thank you custodians for all you do here at Ridgewood Middle School. We are very excited to see new HVAC units being installed for our building, this was a much needed improvement for our building. Today I when I arrived to work I saw several of our old units out in the parking lot after being replaced by new ones! Thank you Fox C-6 for this renovation project, our staff & students will have a nice comfortable learning environment this upcoming school year.

This week the staff at Ridgewood Middle School will be participating in several different workshops & teacher learning. Today we kicked off our Literacy Institute with our Language Arts & Literacy teachers, later this week our Response To Intervention Team of teacher leaders will spend time working on our plan for the 18-19 school centered around supporting all levels of learners at RMS. Ridgewood is a school where we all love to learn - students, teachers, & support staff! Which is another reason why I am extremely proud to serve as the Principal of such a remarkable school building, we have a staff who collaborates with one another in order to run a building who is able to meet the needs of all types of learners.

Enrollment right now for Ridgewood for the 2018-2019 school year stands at 644 students. 6th grade 208, 7th grade 215, and 8th grade 221 – our numbers always change in August as well with new enrollments & students who transfer out of the district. During June our phenomenal guidance counselor Mrs. Stokes & Mrs. Graves our Office Secretary have been finishing up working on our students schedules which will be available to parents on Tyler August 4th. This is what much of the beginning of summer is spent on – tweaking schedules and revising the master schedule when we see that adjustments need to be made. Thank you ladies for your hard work & dedication to seeing all 644 schedules are ready to go in August!

What does the First Day of School like at Ridgewood Middle School:

We start off with a kick off opening assembly introducing our “theme” for the school year. Next year our theme is “Embrace the Struggle” #BulldogGRIT, our focus will be on a growth mindset & healthy habits to be socially, emotionally, & academically successful! All of our students will be in the gym for our assembly where we introduce our staff at Ridgewood along with giving out our Community Leadership Award. Students will sit together by grade level during the assembly, we will then break up into our Advisory Classes (Homeroom). Students will spend the first part of the day with their Advisory teacher learning all about Ridgewood along with participating in team building activities with fellow classmates! We learn how to use our lockers (combination locks), learn cafeteria etiquette & rules, along with just getting to know what it is like to be a Bulldog! Ridgewood Middle’s Character Council Staff & Students plan all of our opening day activities – thank you staff & student leaders!

During the afternoon (after we serve lunches) we will run a short bell schedule to where students get to go to each one of his/her classes for about 8-10 minutes just to familiarize themselves with their “path” to classes along with meeting their teachers. And then we dismiss at 3:05 to head home for the day! Our first day is spent on getting to know our school, laughing, having fun, & most of all leaving our school excited for the next day & the school year!
